This diagram illustrates the origin of ice-rafted debris. Many icebergs will slowly accumulate sediment which becomes embedded within the ice. Over time, icebergs will break off from the glacier, carrying this sediment with them. As the icebergs are transported by ocean currents and progressively melt, the detritus is eventually freed and sinks to the ocean floor. This means that sediment could potentially be transported thousands of kilometers before settling. Ice-rafting can be used to explain the displacement of many archaeological artifacts.
