This diagram illustrates how oxbow lakes are formed. These lakes originate from winding river meanders with a narrow neck. Over time, the neck erodes away to expose a new channel for water to flow through. The water will favor the new channel and gradually, over time, sand and silt will be deposited on the river banks, sealing off the old meander. The resulting C-shaped body of water is called an oxbowlake .
