This diagram shows the approximate areas of rubbish soup in the Pacific Ocean. There are two primary rubbish patches formed by the Pacific Gyre currents. The Eastern rubbish patch lies to the south of China and east of Japan, formed by a gyre current which is rotating counter-clockwise. The Western rubbish patch is located off the west coast of Canada and the United States, close to Hawaii. These garbage patches are enormous, almost the size of a whole continent.
